Evo 1-3 roof rust

If you notice a lot of early Evo's with rust coming through on the roof its caused by condensation that gets trapped between the roof skin and the support bars inside.
The cure is to remove the roof bars from inside the car (this will mean removal of the roof lining) either by cutting them on one side and snapping the spot welds on the other or just brute force and snap the spot welds on both sides.
Once they are out you will see the full extent of the rust from within, clean up all the rust with a wire brush or similar and treat it to some rust curing agent.Clean all the crap glue that Mitsi installed on the back side of the supports now they are out, and re-glue them up with some decent stickaflex (available in a tube from most motor accessory stores) now all you have to do is re-tack weld both sides. If they re-fit nice and tight the stickaflex will hold them in position until you can get someone to weld them either end for you!
Once treated from inside the problem should go away on the outside with the help of a local bodyshop and not return! :-)

That's how we were going to do it, but we were going to put that stop rust stuff on as well as a safe measure.

Nice one Pete thanks for the write up.

Problem is m8 most just treat the outside,if you do the inside first it may save you buying a new roof!
