Yep bodyshop said it would be best to repair than replace so I will make a start later when I get in from work, does the lining come of easy enough ?

RUST

Well got the roof lining off in about half an hour and what a mess it has revealed it is bad on the front bit and I can't just pull tyhat bit off and treat it

Some outside pics first, this is the bit I am most worried about as this panel holds the windscreen in and I can't get under it to remove the rust, do I just get off what I can and treat it

Outside front

Same bit inside

Rest of roof from outside

And the inside

Basically m8 thats what they all look like, shocking isn't it

All i did with the front a rear bit was to wedge a scaper in it and run it back and forth,a few times of doing that usually gets rid of the worst of it, then get some rust treatment in there, loctite do a brill one which is what ive used on mine, it sends all the rust black when its cured and gives the impression that its stopped it dead

That looks a bit worse than mine did tbh. but not much worse. i treated mine about 2 years ago and rattlecanned the roof after just as a temporary measure. have since had it resprayed. can still see slight imperfections in the roof but its a million times better and not rusty lol.

Crap a brick. I just bought a 3 a few days ago and did notice one or two paint blisters. I guess I am going to have a job on my hands in the next few weeks.

Thanks for the heads up, I'll check it out (very gingerly) when I get the beastie home. This has just popped my happy bubble.

Good luck BigEars! I am sorry that you didn't know about this, it always scares me when I think of buying a used car that there could be all kinds of things wrong with it that the current owner doesn't tell you about. At least this is a well known problem with an easy fix that you can take care of.

You know, if it weren't so late I would be tempted to go and pay it a visit tonight already and get a better look at it. The car was cheap, but if I am going to end up spending a ton getting it fixed up it might not work out.

Basic body work I can do myself, especially with this guide here, but I can't weld myself.

I have always wondered what could be done about that rust problem, some time ago, I had a car and the top began to rust, we didn't do anything about it because we figured it was time to get a new car. Thanks mate, that's just another way for me to keep my vehicle looking clean and new.
