MSA British Rallycross Championship
The next round of the Kumho Tyres MSA British Rallycross Championship will take place at Lydden Hill on May 28th.
Rallycross is the high-octane, thrill-a-minute marriage of touring car racing and rallying that pitches some of the fastest racing cars in world in head-to-head action on tracks that combine both tarmac and gravel surfaces.
In Britain, Rallycross is in the ascendancy and the MSA British Championship, organised by the British Rallycross Drivers Association, visits high profile race circuits such as Croft and Knockhill as well as Mondello Park in the Irish Republic. The traditional Rallycross venues such as Lydden also feature in the eight-round championship which runs from March to October.
The series of short sharp races which average three-minutes in length, and which build through the day to the climactic finals where championship points are awarded, is perfect for the 21st century audience. Rallycross provides both a day-long competition for the enthusiast and competitor as well as fast moving entertainment and media-friendly ‘soundbite’ size chunks of action in a colourful arena.
Classes
Supercar
The fastest cars in Rallycross and possibly the most exciting racecars that you will ever see. Averaging more than 550bhp, the four-wheel drive, turbocharged cars will out accelerate a F1 car, but are capable of racing on tarmac and gravel surfaces.
SuperModified
The only real restriction here is that the cars are only allowed two-wheel drive. There are few technical restrictions and the watch words in creating a successful car are power and weight; successful cars in the class pack a punch of around 400bhp per tonne.
Stock Hatch
Production cars with an upper engine capacity limit of 1600cc and two-valves per cylinder. There are tight controls on the tuning modifications permitted to the cars which means that driver ability shows through. The most cost effective way in which to start Rallycross
Junior Rallycross
Open to drivers of between 14 and 16-years of age, Junior Rallycross uses 1000cc Minis prepared to a controlled technical specification.

Lydden Hill
This is a circuit which carry's a lot of history, as Lydden was the home to the British round of the European rallycross championship for a long time.
Lydden is fast and flowing, a bit like croft, which again is a challenge for all drivers. It is one of the the best spectator circuits for Rallycross in the UK as most of the action can be covered from all viewing areas.
It features the famous Devils Elbow and once over Mabbs bank, which has been famous for its incidents over the years, has now been removed from the circuit due to safety concerns. Lydden Hill is located on the south coast of England, very close to Dover (10 miles away). It accessed just off the A2.
History
Started in 1955 by Bill Chesson, the track was originally used for stock cars and grass track racing. By 1965 it had a tarmac surface and hosted car racing up to Formula 3 level. In 1967 the track hosted rallycross on a combined grass/tarmac circuit.
The circuit was sold to Tom Bissett in 1989, and then to the TAG-McLaren Group in 1991. Early McLaren plans to turn the track into a F1 test track were scrapped, but as of October 1999, McLaren plan to rebuild the track as a private road car testing facility, with track reprofiling beginning in 2003.
