Seeking enlightenment

Good Evening EVO folk of the world.

I come in search of knowledge before going and buying another car that I then blow up months later! Put simply I need a slightly more practical toy/weekend car. The current one(s) are a 205 GTi Mi 16, a near rally spec mini (the proper one before someone asks! ), and an Mk Indy Bird (think cheaper Caterham type thing, but with a Honda Blackbird engine and you're most of the way there). This little lot is due to go in the near future and I'm looking for a more usable toy. I need a roof, and am getting fed up of wearing a crash hat to drive my car. High servicing costs aren't an issue, as it's one car rather than 3, and I'm used to 10-15 mpg, so that won't scare me either. Oh, and a mate already has a WRX estate thingy. So here I am.
I quite like the EVO VI, but I'm worried about the high mileage one's that come up in my price range. I can stretch to £8k, but am I being un-realistic? I'm after a standard car, or very near anyway. IE a different exhaust and air filter are ok, but not too much more as insurance won't be cheap as I'm only 24! Any thoughts/hints/tips/helpers good folk of evo.net?
