Vibration that gets worse with higher revs ?
Hi,
My 4 RS has started vibrating/buzzing after a high speed blast. It was very smooth before and went like this all of a sudden, now you get a buzzing vibration/droning noise through the whole car that gets worse the higher the revs in any gear. Stick it in neutral or dip the clutch and let it idle when moving then it go's away. It still seems to drive fine, no loss of power or anything but something is wrong ! I got the belts changed a few months ago because when I bought it the balancer belt was out. Its similar to that, but not quite the same....... could it of snapped? Its got a 6 month old magnex downpipe, is the flexi pipe prone to breaking up on these? Any other ideas? I really appreciate your replys!! Many thanks Trev _______________

I wouldve said baffles in the backbox, cat or the flexi but then that would make the noise out of gear too :???:

Hi mate,
Sorry, i have changed my 1st post, I dont think its drive train related (could be wrong) if you dip the clutch or drop in into neutral when your going along and let the car idle, then the vibes go away. Gear selection seems fine, even if you rev the car up at standstill there is a vibration/resonance that gets worse the higher up the rev range you go, 3k is bearable, 4k very noticable, 5-6-7k and it feels almost like it might shake itself apart !! :???: Trev.

Martin, it does make the noise/vibes out of gear .........no cat on there at the mo but I could try fitting the stock downpipe + cat to see if it solves it, its got a single box Scorpion system on it :???:
Cheers Trev.

Sounds to me like the prop may have thrown a weight! :???:

Could of :???: but even if its at standstill in neutral and you rev it, the vibes are still there..................
I am thinking out loud here but if it was drivetrain related surely if you were doing say 70mph and you drop into neutral the noise would still be there ? it go's silent when you dip the cluch/drop into neutral at speed. would the prop just vibrate under load? the noise/vibes get worse with revs, not speed i.e, 1st gear is as bad as 5th :???:

sounds like the take up springs on clutch plate very badly worn and loose, or input shaft bearings, or layshaft bearings. So if if you hold revs in neautral, foot of clutch say 3500rpm then dip clutch does the noise go, if noise does go at least you can pin point clutch or gearbox, which ever one it is the box will have to come out, sorry if it is one of these

No, the noise is the same with clutch pedal in or out, rolling or at standstill. New clutch fitted a max of two thousand miles ago.
:???: :???: :???: Cheers Trev

if noise doesn't go like you say when clutch is down, what abouut cambelt end perhaps the tensioner or idler pulley, ive heard them very noisey not on an evo but on a ford, take top belt cover off and have a listen, if it sounds that end squirt some wd40 onto belt and see if you can get some on the pulleys hopefully if it one of these it will go quiet or quieter at least for you to pin point area. gaz
