EVO 1 Buying Guide. Please help
Hi
Firstly great forum! Secondly... help! I'm looking at purchasing an EVO 1 GSR, what should i look out for? Its a Jan 92 K plate 90,000KM In Saint Amour Green which I believe is a factory colour? Here are the sales points from it - is there anything i need to worry about? IT HAS APEXI INDUCTION KIT (BRAND NEW) FULL DECAT 3" EXHAUST JASMA 5" TAIL HAS BEEN DELIMITED, IS IN MPH HAS UPRATED SUSPENSION NOT SURE OF MAKE HAS 17INCH ALLOYS EVERYTHING WORKS FINE ,AIRCON IS COLD, NEW CLUTCH (LAST OWNER) IRIDIUM SPARK PLUGS ALSO HAS I/C WATERSPRAY. AND SARD DUMPVALVE. The owner also states this: MITSUBISHI EVOS SUFFER FROM RATTLING TAPPETS (LASH ADJUSTERS) I HAVE CHANGED THESE TODAY FOR UPRATED ONES FROM AMERICA ,SO THATS ANNOYING TAPPING GONE FOR GOOD. PUT FRESH CASTROL RS 10 60 FULL SYN OIL IN ALSO AND GEN MITSI FILTER. My background is in Imprezas, are EVO's similar in what to look for? Turbo whine/gearbox and diff noises etc etc I'm led to believe that the Mitsi internals are stronger than Subarus - the chap says the previous owner had it RR'd at 311bhp... seems a little high for just exhaust and filter What sort of money should I be paying for this car? Thanks hugely in advance R  |

firstly
to evo-net pal..the sounds like a good example for what i have read.. they all have i/c water spray as standard so thats not a mod.. the exhauste you stated it to be a jasma... witch just means its passed the noise levels in japan... i have one on mine and wouldnt swop it till its dead :muhaha: as never had any problems from it.. as for price i would say if in genrealy good order mechanicly and body would be worth around 3.5-4k

Have you checked out the buying guide on here? Is very usefull and will help alot. There are a couple of things to look for though.
When driving it, make sure all the gears change ok and no major crunching. If there is a slight notch between any of them then that can be sorted easily. Secondly a knocking noise from the rear indicates worn drop links but this can also happen on the front. Not too expensive to fix but can be a pain to do. Check the bulk head around the clutch master cylinder to see if its cracking or weak. If it is then will need a plate welding over it. Check the chassis number to make sure it is an evo 1. Sounds stupid bit worth checking. Ask the garage what petrol they have been using since imported. See if they warm the car up before giving it some and also make sure they cool it down before turning it off. If alot of people have been to see this car and been out for a test drive in it and none of these points have been done before and after the drive it could lead to problems in the future. (you use to scoobys so prob know the drill). Hope i helped a bit and anything i can help you with as i use to own an evo 1 before i wrote it off. |

Rallyman.
I can tell by your choosen call sign I like you already. :-) As previously mentioned, the Evo buyers guide on this site is fantastic and I strongly advise a read through. From your description here are my thoughts. Yes ... there was a dark green color available for the Evo I so it's probably factory. You didn't list any modifications to worry about. If you plan on using the car in motorsports or for weekend track duty loose the 17s. The CD series works best on 15s or 16s. (Just from experience) The lifter tapping is common on ALL CD-CE series Evos. I think we had a series of posts on that earlier. The transmissions will whine on the early evos, not to worry about that. If you decide to do a transmission swap, be advised the CE transmissions bolt directly on but the axles (the short one) is different on the CD and CEs so you will need an axle if you do that. I found this interesting ... The owner also states this: MITSUBISHI EVOS SUFFER FROM RATTLING TAPPETS (LASH ADJUSTERS) I HAVE CHANGED THESE TODAY FOR UPRATED ONES FROM AMERICA ,SO THATS ANNOYING TAPPING GONE FOR GOOD. The valve/lifter kit may be one from the US market 4G63T that came in the Eclipse/Egale Talon series cars. Hard to say if this is true or not unless you pull the valve cover. However, it is not any direct OEM pieces from the US as the Eclipse/Egale Talons in the US had the same exact lifter ticking issue. You may have to investigate on the interenet after you lift the valve cover. Someone also mentioned checking the roof canopy. All 93-94 model year Mitsubishi cars had faulting welds on the canopy supports resulting in a series of rust spots appearing. No fix for this without a body shop cutting and installing a new roof canopy. Otherwise, enjoy one of the best cars around. |
