E3 Wastegate

Hi there,

Just a general question as I have seen a few mentions on here of having the wastgate altered on a III to stop boost creep.

What exactly is the mod that is done? and is it something I can do myself or will I have to go and visit a specialist.?

Thanks

Tyrant on the MLR is an expert on this.

Basically he ports the wastegate and fabricates a larger "flapper" thus eliminating boost creep.

Another alternative is to buy a new ported one from the US for about £200 and it acheives the same results!

Thanks for that Carl,

So is that a fairly simple DIY job to refit, or is it a specialist only thing??

Not all evo's suffer from boost creep. I have been lucky with my old evo 1 and my now evo 3. The evo 1 was running 1.2 bar with no boost creep and my evo 3 is running 1 bar with no boost creep. Luck of the draw unfortunatly. Wait till you get it and have have all the mods with the boost at 1 bar (max for std evo 3 engine internals) and see how she goes before you go spending ya money.

Cheers Ben :-)

On the same vein, how is the boost controlled in a 3?? is it mechanical only, as I cant see a solenoid attached to the actuater on mine ?

Cheers

I had quite severe boost creep on my E1. It was running 0.9 but used to creep right up to 1.4 which was nice!!

Haven't had the same issues with my E3 though. Induction, downpipe, decat and HKS Superdragger and she holds dead on 1 bar! 8)

The solenoid is under your battery tray mate. Follow the hose up from your actuator and you will find it!

Dont use the actuator to set your boost though. Either buy yourself an electronic boost controller or do as benny has done and and put a Dawes device.

Dawes Devices are superb mate. They don't give you as much control as a Profec or other electronic boost controller but they allow you to set the boost from under the bonnet and it holds it firm.

If you do decide on a Dawes Device just for fun before plumbing it in correctly run the hose into the induction rather than vacuum source and watch the boost fly up to 1.8bar a few times!!! Great fun but very bad news for the 4g63!!!
