Idling problems

My mate has just brought an Evo 4. He's had it about a month and he's now starting to get a few problems. Its got an HKS ssqv and Apexi induction. The car has been fine up until the last week?!?!

Its is hard to start in the mornings and idles really lumpy. Revs between 500 and 900 rpm when stationary and also in slow moving traffic . He says its fine when he is driving along normally?!?!?

Is it the Electronic ignition module as someone suggested to him??

Or does anyone else have an idea what it could be??

It sounds like the Idle control valve, commonly called a stepper motor
If they are like the FTO ones you can have them reset by mitsi dealer or
if its knackered they are about £350 from mitsubihi
You can get them for about £120 though so shop about

I've heard that VTA dump valve's can cause unsettled idling.

yeah BOVs can course problems with idle and sometimes stalling...

its because they are letting out metered air and i belive it then makes the car run rich as the fuel is being put in but here is no air for it

hehe somthing like that...

Has he just put the DOV on ? or has it been there since he had it ?

It is without doubt the VTA, you can get an idle stabiliser kit from HKS for £100 to sort this, or just put the standard one back on.

Hey, I'm no Mech. nor do I clam to be one. But I had similar problems with my 8. I had it for about 7 months and started to have idling probs. And what was my salvation was changing the spark plugs.... See my car was a tester for the fine folks a Mitsubishi in Hollywood California and it seems that they REALLY did test it. The plugs were horrible.... Anyway long story short, a pair of NGK spark plugs got her back were she should be. I hope this helps ya.
