something blown up

Help please when starting my car yesturday the battery was flat so it didnt turn over enough but then there was this allmighty bang and this plastic box that sits under the o/s wheel arch has blown to pieces. does anyone know what it is and what damage it could have done. this is on a 93 evo 1 2000cc T. many thanks
