Disabling Air Bags

The crash protection air bags that are fitted to a car-is there any way to disable them? If you should be one of those who fall into the at risk of greater injury from the air bag than the crash, could you choose to disable them?

And what would the insurance implications of that be-would your insurance be invalidated by it?

I think you can for most vehicles, but depending on how it is setup (not sure if each auto are done the same), you might want to take a peek at the manuel to see if they have listed how-to in there, otherwise best bet is to contact whom you purchased the car from. I think also that some insurance companies will be upset if you do it too, check that as well.

Thanks. I have no intention of doing so myself-it's just one of those what if questions you know. Especially in light of the things I had read about air bags being worse off for larger people than having no air bag at all, and I didn't know if it was even possible to turn them off.

I think that your insurance rates would increase if you disable any of the safety features in your car such as the airbags. I am not sure how much or anything like this but will look around and see if I can get a better answer for you.

I'm very sure about the insurance rates going up, especially with the lack of airbags. I've never disabled or taken them out, but I think it'd be a job better suited to a car mechanic, who could also tell you whether you really should or shouldn't.

I would think your best bet to disable that airbags would be to take the car back to the dealer to ensure that the whole thing is done properly. I have never had my airbags disabled but I have though about it. I am very short and so very close to the steering wheel and they kind of freak me out.

I am not sure why you would want to disable them but I think it would definitely be a job for the mechanic or as speeddemon said the dealer. Definitely not a DIY there.

Yah, I had the same concern I'd like to ask around down here. Thanks for posting it here. I had my question answered. I went straight to the thread upon reading the topic.
