Evo 4 Diff / Drive shaft noise?

There's a nasty clunk coming from the rear of my Evo 4. Although hardly noticeable when driving straight, it is still present but really noticeable when turning left or right.

The car has been up on a ramp today and the clunk can be heard when the transmission is put through to the back wheels. The mechanic who took a look seems to think the noise is coming from the front of the diff, from the prop connection though he also noticed what seemed to be a lot of vertical movement on the n/s rear driveshaft too, it moved up and down quite lot when moved by hand.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem might be? The mechanic seems to think its a shagged rear diff. Before I go trying to get my hands on one has anyone else got any thing they can suggest?

The top mounts were solid as were the diff bolts themselves.

Cheers,

Rob.

sorry m8, theres no easy way to say this ,diff is f-ck-d, get the ayc and diff oil levels checked, theres two separate sections in the diff, one for transmission oil and one for the ayc clutch bath, and theres the ayc fuid reservoir in the boot, get it done by someone who knows about evos, the ayc has to be bled out, mine startedwith a noise on right hand bends then it got worse and was making noise even on the straight,,then i found the ayc was dissconnected, i only had it two weeks,at that stage the diff was knackered, ive a diff from an 8 in mine now, no ayc to worry about either, hope im wrong but i doubt it.

Bugger

Thanks for the post, I suspected it was sh*gged but thought I'd run it by more knowledgeable people before I tried to source one.

You mention a diff from an 8, which models are compatible with the iv setup?

Cheers,

Rob.
