Oil in the intercooler
My car has always used oil, although the valve stem guides have been changed and I am told the rings on the pistons weren't too bad when they were apart. It does not show as burning oil on the co2 test for the mot it actually comes out pretty clean (again so I am told - 0.69 co% vol and 95 HC ppm vol).
I have been told that the turbo could be leaking through the seals, and oil into the intercooler be the source of the consumption. Now I've had the bumper off and attach a couple of pics. It is definitly wet with oil in the intercooler but I was expecting it to be swimming with oil, which it is not. However I don't know what it would look like for the consumption of oil I have been getting through??? Any one else had this problem or can comment on the pics or just shed some light on the matter? Cheers Dave

Where the hell else is it going?
Cheers for the reply, only trouble is where the hell is the oil going to then? No leaks underneath but certainly using some oil!

Engine in general fairly good - bottom end rebuilt by Rich at Rg motorsport 3-4k miles ago and head cleaned up and resealed with full gasket set before this (certainly not lacking power). Only things not done were the rings and oil seals on pistons. I suspect that there is some smoke at high rev end - i guess I am answering my own original question but I needed to be sure about the turbo seals before considering more open heart surgery. Although could the oil loss be anything else? Do these early evos use oil in general and so just fill it up and stop bleating!?

Just out of interest, what do you think your oil consumption is? Roughly.

Consumption I would reckon to be around 1/2 to a pint of oil every 3-400 miles. I know other people say this is fairly normal and others say they use none at all. I asked Mitsibishi in Corby and one of the technicians said that even on the 8's they won't do anything under warrenty for the engine if using less than 1 liter every 1000 miles or so? So is this coming down to luck of the draw with the car? I have to say i'm a little confused (this does not take much
)and don't want to spend a fortune on rebuilds when it might not hepl anyway!I appreciate all comments, even the piss take ones! (they show you care as well apparently! :muhaha: ) Cheers Dave |
