Engine Light on the 2005 Durango.

Hey Folks,

I'm currently driving around town a 2005 Dodge Durango. It's running a 5.7 L Hemi V8 engine, at around 355 hp. I don't know why, but occasionally, especially when I stop short, the engine light turns on. It's on its third time occurring. And I try to reset it and it only stopped it once. (For a while) and turning the car on and off stopped it until I had stop short and nearly hit a squirrel. The nearest Dealer is nearly an hour there and back (Depending on traffic) and I don't want to be stuck there another hour over something that's doesn't seem worth it. I've opened the hood and looked at the engine myself and I haven't yet seen anything really wrong.. Seals and all look good, oil is full. I even asked my friend (Whos a Mechanic) and he said it even checked out alright. I'm always hesitant to drive around with a engine light on, but I don't seem to see any other issue. Does anyone here know a surefire way to get this engine light back to it's proper place?

Thanks,

-Laos

There's a lot of talk that the engine light is used to milk money out for even the most spectacularly well maintained vehicle. I'm not much help unfortunately, but I do know a lot of people who ignore it offhand as a result of exactly your sort of problem.

We had problems like that in the past, and it turned out to be faulty wiring in the dash. There was nothing wrong at all. In this case, the air bag lights would come on if I turned a corner too tightly, and wouldn't go off till I turned the engine off, powered down the dash and started again.

I had it fixed once and it came back a year or so later, so I just left it.

Yeah, I've always thought that the point in it was to grab your milk money or something. I'm always fearful of letting stay on. At least before reaching a dealership. Since in sense, like you said with Dash Wiring. They claim its an issue, fix it and it just comes back.

Why don't they just stick fly paper in the far and make you smack into it, and it reads "GO BUY SOMETHING AT THE DEALERSHIP*

A friend of mine has a similar experiance, only the solution was very simply. He filled up at a gas station and was in a hurry to drive so he didn't screw the cover correctly. After much ado, they still did not find out until he bought gas again and screwed it in properly. He realized the light went off. . I hope you find your solution sooner than later.

on the dodge's there are two different kinds of codes.... soft codes and hard codes. soft codes go away with turning off the ignition.... hard codes stay until the ecu is reset.

there should be a code show up in the odometer like "P*****" if you can get me the code I'll look it up for you.
