Blitz nur spec........WHY wont it pop
Hi everyone,
I recently just bought an evo 7 FQ300........ totally awsome car! i have alredy started modding it even though I said I would leave it standard for a while ops: After searchin and reading lots I settled on a blitz nur spec exhaust. So I have it fitted now, from the cat back, and also fitted a magnex de-cat pipe. I'll agree it's very loud on idle and when just pootling round town (say 2-3000 rpm) but it gets noticeable more quiet when you go faster, and by the time your doing 70 and just crusing it really isnt that noticeable. certainly not boomy or anything as long as you are fairly giner on the gas. I also fitted a HQS SSQV BOV which sounds nice (yes i know a lot of ppl think its a bit chav, but this being my first turbo'd car, i just have to get it out of my system lol :-) ) Now.......... the whole reason I bought this system was becuase i wanted the pops and bangs on overrun/gear change, but so far it doesnt do anything at all! I used to be able to make my civic type-r pop all the time by giving it some stick, pulling the clutch in, letting the revs drop right down, then bringing the clutch back up. I've tried eveything from giving it loads of stick (it is nice and hot!) and then letting off but nothing Do you think mapping the ECU will make any difference? Or maybe I should change the exhaust for something else? I actually think the blitz isnt all that loud on full chat compared to lower down the rev range, but then I have been used to the scream of the vtec! Any help much appriciated. I have read so many posts with ppl saying their exhaust pop and bang all the time on overrun..... why wont mine! Cheers Mike |

You need anti-lag mate........ pop pop bang bang flames out of the exhaust.

Hi mike,
You won't get pops from a stock fueling setup and free flowing exhaust. With an increase in boost pressure on track i'd get the odd flame from overfuelling, but a larger diameter exhaust is meant to clear exhaust gases as easily as possible, so it takes a lot of over fuelling to get it to pop in the exhaust. You may get the odd one if you hit limiter with a hot exhaust, but the main cause of exhaust gas explosions comes from a lot of unburnt fuel, such as anti lag. You need a new ecu to do that, even better than the sound effects, that'll give you more power with better delivery, but cost £1,500 to £2,000. Generally a lot of pops and bangs on normal use (not anti lag) of a remapped ECU means it's not been mapped very well. As for the noise, you don't hear so much from inside, but try a tunnel or being behind your car under load, it's always good for childish fun :-)

thanks for the replies guys..... i dont really want to go down the anti lag route as i hear its not really very good for the turbo. So i assume then that i will need to get the ECU remapped if i want it to pop etc.
Would something like an ECUTEK be enuff or would I need to get a proper remappable one like an apexi/autotronic/gems? Also..... is a boost controller absolutley necessary if ur having it remapped for more power? cheers mike |

I have:
Evo III with cat-back Kakimoto 2.75" system + decat, 1bar boost, HKS SSQV, Apexi panel filter and Gizzmo ECU (up until recently I had stock ECU and 0.9bar boost) and I get pops, bangs and flames galore... Even when I had lower boost and stock ECU I got flames. Big blue ones apparently. Not sure why yours isn't doing it, although I would have thought a decat would help?

Hi Mike,
Replacing the downpipe will open the the exhust system to a full 3" which will gain you that extra noise that you are seeking As Dral said, you only get the pops with excess fuel which will only happens ocasionally when driving hard and the exhaust is hot. Having an ECU remap or Standalone wont really make to much of a difference because the bang is the excess fuel, wich when having a remap, the fuelling should be spot on, and again will only happen ocassionally. The only real way is to run anti-lag.It doesnt actually damage the turbo unless running with a Throttle Kicker (this is what keeps the turbo spooled), without a throttle kicker, there is no true anti-lag, just a luagh button Hope this helps. If you need any help at all or have any questions, just give me a call :-) lloyd

Agree with what everyone has said about ecu.
Also try some 99ron tesco petrol. There has been a lot of tests and talks on other forums and this fuels ability to increase pops and bangs in the exhaust. Wierd i Know but works in my Lotus too.
