EVO V versus IMPREZA PPP

I have posted this report on the two sccby sites that I still use, Do you think it's a fair comparison?

Evo V versus Subaru Impreza turbo PPP

It’s been a while now since I went over to the dark side! So here goes my feeble attempt at trying to quantify the differences. Firstly the Evo has much shorter gearing than the Scoob, so it immediately feels more responsive. I remember in the Scoob having to wait a while until the turbo spooled up, no such wait in the Evo, it’s instantaneous, whatever gear your in from virtually any rev position the pull is there straight away, and what a pull! I’ve never driven a 280bhp Scoob with Jap gearing so in all fairness I really can’t compare, but from what I had to what I’ve got the Evo wins every time.
The red line in the Evo is the same as the Scoob 7k, in reality the limiter doesn’t come in until about 8k (not that I’ve been there!) and it’s so smooth and vibration free. Also the service items are so much more accessible. I changed the plugs, air filter, oil filter, and oil, without having to jack the car up and in about ½ hour! So in conclusion I think the Evo has it on the engine side. (Flat four burble apart!) Handling/road holding. My scoob had prodrive lowered suspension and 18” wheels so it was quite firm, The evo, bloody hell it’s firm and then some! When I took a mate out for a ride he said “ wow I’ve never known what running over a fag packet felt like! Now I do” get the idea? But this active yaw control, it is simply awesome, whatever line you decide to take, that’s the line the car sticks to. In the scoob understeer was quite pronounced especially in the wet, whereas the evo adopts a very neutral position and the turn in is so precise whatever the road or weather conditions. Without a doubt on normal roads it would be a very foolish driver who would try to find the Evo’s limits? So again from what I had to what I’ve got then the Scoob comes in second place again. Looks, personally this is purely a matter of opinion, whilst the classic scoob shape is the best scoob shape, IMHO! And the evo V/V1 is the best evo shape, again IMHO; on the whole I score these two even. Interior, we all know scoobs will never win any competitions for interiors! Well the same applies to the evo! In fact as the Recaro’s in the evo can’t be adjusted for height! Then the scoob must take full points for this round.
All the rest i.e. insurance costs, fuel costs, (apart from the stupidly small tank!) tyres, brakes, service items, will probably be about the same on both cars. So the big question, Evo V or Impreza? Well after only a short period of ownership I can confidently say that I much prefer the Evo to the Scoob, not least for the ability to be more hands on with the greasy bits. But mostly for the huge grin it puts on my face every time my right foot hits the carpet.

Nice post Dave, pretty well sums it up I think!
I used to own a 'classic' shape jap import WRX before coming to the dark side, here's my thoughts:
Speed: Evo absolutely walks this one. My scoob was dynod at 272bhp (it was a 260ps model, with scoobysport downpipe, blitz exhaust & induction), but the evo has so much more torque, and over a wider rev range.
Handling/ride: I had P1 suspension with prodrive geometry settings on the scoob, it handled really nicely, the ride was quite supple also. You could tell when you were approaching the limit, it felt quite progressive at that limit too. The evo used to be bone hard, quite fidgety over bumps too. I now have eibachs on it, and it has transformed the ride, I would highly recommend this mod to any evo owner. The evo has such high grip levels, that to get near it's limit on a public road, you'd be going at insane speeds. I can take bends on a quiet road on my commute route at 100mph that the scoob was nearing it's limit round at 85mph. I do worry that if the evo stepped out of line, it would go quickly and fire me into a hedge!
Looks: They are both butt ugly in a nice, menacing sort of way, although the scoob is really dated now, whereas I quite like the modern lines of my evo.
Noise: The scoob wins this one, it sounded awesome with the blitz. My neighbours may disagree.
Running costs: The evo is slightly more expensive as the AYC needs servicing every 4.5k, which is a pain.
Both good cars, but the evo wins overall, a very impressive machine. No regrets from me!
Cheers
Leigh

Found this on the EVO REGISTER site!!

(This post is in regard to the Hydraulic fluid, not the Diff torque transfer mechanism fluid!! which is a simple drop & fill procedure)

First of all, just wanted to say that in Jamaica we don't bleed our AYC hydraulic fluid unless :
1. air got introduced into the system somehow.
2. the fluid is f'ecked beyond all belief.
3. the diff has to be taken down for disassemmbly.
The Mut-II diagnostic computer is not used.

We do change our ayc torque transfer fluid though... usually when the diff starts to make noise on cornering. Not according to any service schedule.

Having seen numerous posts on the MLR about the UK dealers charging $$ to bleed the AYC hydraulic fluid (boot bottle fluid ) using the Mut-II as a regular part of the AYC service, I am perplexed. Why are you folks bleeding your AYC hydraulic fluid so often?

Regular bleeding of the AYC fluid every 4,500 miles is not mentioned in any Evo service manual. In fact, the manuals do not mention a regular service interval for bleeding.

Of note, the Evo 4 & 5 service manual makes no mention of using the Mut-II computer to aid in such:

Makes you think doesn't it??
